I have a ONE year old! I can’t believe it. This past weekend we celebrated Vienna’s “little cutie” first birthday with a small family gathering in my parent’s backyard (hooray for Pennsylvania going into green!) and I wanted to share a few of the details from the day.
I absolutely loved putting together this party for her starting with the hand-drawn invitation. When I drew this, I didn’t know if we were going to be able to have a party yet, but I had the idea for the design and just needed to get it out on paper. Mak said it has a vintage carousel feel and that made me happy!
I got to play florist, which was so much fun. You guys know I’ll take any excuse to play with flowers! Combining fruit with flowers in arrangements looks whimsical and I used terra cotta pots for a touch of rustic. There are mason jars inside the pots to hold the water. I was really pleased with how they turned out.
Vienna’s smash cake was a homemade gluten-free yellow cake. I topped it with the mandarins and flowers to match the theme.
We asked guests to sign this Dr. Suess birthday book for Vienna! It’s such a cute book.
The sign in the background is a gift I painted using soft pastels and colored pencils. Hopefully one day Vienna will like it.
The balloon garland was another favorite detail! Thank goodness for my parent’s air compressor, but other than that, it was a lot easier than I thought to make. You just continuously tie the balloons onto one long string. It was a bit time-consuming but simple. I stuck some Italian Ruscus into the balloons right before guests arrived.
The little guest of honor!
Daddy’s girl…
I’m pretty sure she ate her weight in cake that day. Our smash cake was just a tad big! But hey, you only turn one once.
Happy Birthday, my darling girl. A year (+ 9 months) of loving you and forever to go…

Hi! The floral arrangements are beautiful! Did you use real mandarin branches for the arrangements, or purchase faux ones? I’m looking to do something similar for my daughter’s birthday!
