If you’re the type to wake up early (read: before 10 AM), one of the best ways to surprise your person and start the day off the romantic way is to make breakfast in bed. I can only make this work if I tell my boyfriend to sleep in until at least 11 AM – but that always arouses suspicion.
Since we’re in February and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, I’m going to help you out and show you how to make a dreamy breakfast in bed – one you can handle regardless of your sleep schedule.
Prepare in Advance
Buy your groceries at least a day before so you know what the plan is. Play to your strengths here – if you always burn the bacon, don’t make bacon. If you’re most comfortable with a box pancake mix, go with your gut.
The goal is to set yourself up for the easiest possible success so you can roll out of bed when your alarm goes off and get going (if you’re a morning person, I envy you).
Here’s a list of staples to make sure you have:
- Serving tray
- Silverware
- Pancake mix (or ingredients for a homemade batter)
- Fruit juice
- Coffee
- Butter
- Syrup
- Fresh fruit
If you want to serve something other than carbs, try Greek yogurt topped with almond slices. Or fresh fruit. Or just go with the carbs – your choice.
We also recommend a cute card to show how much you care. Like our “Meant to Bee” card!
Keep It Classic with Blueberry Pancakes
A fan favorite, blueberry pancakes are easy to make and elevate the traditional, expected plain pancake. I threw in some blueberry waffles too. When you use a box mix, you have more options than you’d think. If you’ve never made blueberry pancakes before, just plop a handful of fresh blueberries into your box mix batter (follow the instructions on the package) and scoop about 1/3 cup on to a griddle over low heat.
Drizzle your pancakes/waffles with syrup and slap on some cinnamon honey butter (recipe below). Then, for your big finish, toss a few pink and white sprinkles on top and call yourself Ina Garten!
Although I’m probably more of a Jeffrey.
Whip Up Cinnamon Honey Butter
Afraid of flavored butters? Well this one is delicious and very simple. And it only takes one bowl.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp cinnamon
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until creamy.
Simplest thing ever, right? And it’s so, so good. Like, sticky camera good, because I couldn’t stop eating it while I was photographing this post. That’s how delicious it is. Oh, and I totally recommend using a mini spatula to spread the butter on your pancakes. It’s like using a knife, but cuter.
Make a Grapefruit Refresher
The L&V Flagship Store’s refresher is starting to make quite a name for itself. So I thought it was only fair to you that I bring some of that magic to the blog. Refreshers consist of Ginger Ale and typically a non-alcoholic mixer, but this breakfast refresher uses grapefruit juice instead for freshness.
Mix the following:
- 1 part grapefruit juice (mine is store-bought)
- 1 part Ginger Ale
- 1/4 part sparkling water
You can always use more Ginger Ale if you don’t love grapefruit. It’s a required taste but grapefruit has a lot of health benefits and it’s pink!
Add a Special Touch to Your Breakfast in Bed
Regardless of who you’re sharing breakfast in bed with, laying out flowers or any sort of greenery brightens up the space and makes your person feel special. I love the look of yellow tulips for a bit of sunshine inside.
If you feel so inclined, you can put the service in room service with an adorable print out menu! I found mine on Pinterest, but it’s originally from the Kate Spade blog. I love the Wes Anderson vibe and as a bonus, it matches well with the grapefruit refresher.
